What Causes Roof Shingles to Curl and How to Prevent It

March 21, 2023
Clayton Napier

Old worn out asphalt shingles on the roof of a residential home that need to be replaced.

Common reasons roof shingles curl include poor attic ventilation, improper roofing installation, and more. Learn the causes of curled shingles and what to do about them.

Curled shingles will compromise your home’s protective layer and make your roof wear out quicker, making it more vulnerable to damage from storms, high winds, hail, and more.

How can you keep shingles from curling? What do curled shingles tell you about your roof’s integrity, and how serious is it if you don’t do something to fix the problem?

Read on to discover the answers to this common roofing issue.

Why Are Your Roof Shingles Curling?

1. Your attic is not ventilated properly

Warm, moist air rises into your attic from your home. When there isn’t adequate airflow through roof vents, moisture, and heat can become trapped in your attic. The heat buildup inside it produces unhealthy mold which can cause your roof shingles to curl.

2. Your current roof was not installed correctly

If an experienced team of professionals did not install your current roof, it leads to problems. If roofers put nails that were too long into your roof, that can cause your roof shingles to curl. If nails were improperly placed, or if there weren’t enough nails used when your home’s protective layer was installed, curled shingles may result.

3. There are multiple layers of roofing on your home

Most manufacturers require your roof to be removed before a new one is put onto your home. If that didn’t happen, and your current roof is located on top of an old roof with curled shingles, then your current roof shingles may curl as well.

4. Your roof shingles are not aligned

If the tar line on your roof shingles wasn’t appropriately aligned during installation by an experienced roofing contractor, then it didn’t adhere as it should have. The result? Curling shingles.

5. There is moisture in your roof decking

It’s possible that moisture may have been absorbed in your roof decking before your new roofing was installed. The water can cause your decking to shift and roof shingles to curl.

6. Your roof is oldest

Your roof will show its age over time, so if you see curling shingles on your current roof, contact a trustworthy roofing team and have it inspected.

How to Keep Your Shingles from Curling

1. Take time to find a reputable roofer

When you need a new roof, invest the necessary time it takes to find a reliable roofer who will give great attention to detail and install your new roof properly. This will prevent problems like curled shingles!

How do you know you can trust your home’s protection with a roofing company? Read online reviews, check their BBB rating, and ask the company for references from recent clients so you can see their work firsthand. Ensure they are licensed with the state and carry both workers’ compensation and general liability insurance. Get a detailed estimate from a few companies and find the best fit for your needs.

How does hiring a reputable company keep your roof shingles from curling? The roofer will ensure materials that work well are installed.

2. Make sure your attic has proper ventilation

Attic ventilation is vital to your roof’s longevity and helps prevent curling shingles. Your roof needs to breathe, and proper attic ventilation ensures it does. Hire a reputable roofer to verify your attic has adequate ventilation to help it avoid curling shingles in the first place.

3. Have your roof repairs done promptly when you spot an issue

Check your roof twice a year and after any major storms. If you spot curling shingles, or missing or damaged shingles, contact your roofer and have them do an inspection right away. Don’t risk the possibility of roof leaks and major problems by delaying necessary roof repairs.
