How Can Wind Damage Affect Your Roof, and Why Regular Inspections Are Important

If you’re like most homeowners, spotting roof damage from high winds isn’t easy—and figuring out whether you need a repair or full replacement can be even trickier. Some damage simply isn’t visible from the ground, and it’s not always clear if wind was to blame.

Keep reading to learn the subtle signs of wind damage, why regular roof inspections matter, and how proactive maintenance can help you avoid costly repairs and water issues down the road.

Signs Your Roof Has Wind Damage

Does your roof have hidden wind damage? Don’t underestimate the impact wind can have on your roof—particularly if it’s an older three-tab system. Damage can range from minor to major depending on the wind’s speed. Hail can accompany high winds, causing even more issues. Gusty wind can cause tree limbs to fall or take flight, and if they impact your roof, leaks occur almost immediately. Look for:

Debris on Your Roof

If a major storm has passed through the area and you spot a tree limb on your roof, or penetrating it, you’ve got wind damage that needs to be addressed fast. If water has made its way into your home as a result, contact a water remediation service to prevent mold from growing. Reach out to a roofer to resolve the roof damage promptly with repairs or replacement. Typically, repairs are done if a small area is affected (and the roofer can match your shingle color and type), but if damage is more widespread, a roof replacement may be the best long-term solution.

Water Damage

Do you notice discoloration in your home’s highest floor’s ceilings? You may have wind damage to your roof that caused water infiltration. If water is making its way into your home due to a faulty roof, it’s important to address it quickly. Stop the problem in its tracks by scheduling a roof inspection that will put you “in the know” about your roof’s condition and give you the best plan of action to resolve issues. Your contractor will tarp your roof to stop the leak until it can be properly repaired or until your roof is replaced. This saves you time and money and positions you to resolve the issue properly.

Moisture in Your Attic

It may sound like a funny place to look, but if the area has experienced high winds and you’re wondering if your roof was affected, grab a flashlight and climb into your attic. Why? Because roof leaks show up in the attic. Look for moist insulation, wet wood, or sunlight peering through your attic’s ceiling. If there is no visible evidence of a roof leak, yet there is a musty, moldy smell to your attic, you may have hidden damage. Contact a roofer for an inspection.

Missing Shingles

If your roof has shingles missing, that’s an obvious sign the wind has blown them off and it’s time to contact a roofer to have a look. Don’t risk the damage missing shingles can cause. Resolve the situation quickly with a roofer’s help.

Gutter Damage

If debris is picked by the wind and then hits your gutters, they may dent or pull away from your
roof’s edge. If you notice this, have them repaired to prevent further damage.

Curled Shingles

Asphalt shingles should look uniform, so if you notice your roof shingles are lifted or curled, it may be due to wind damage. Contact a reputable roofer for an inspection.

Flapping Shingles

If the wind has impacted your roof’s integrity, you may spot asphalt shingles flapping. This is nothing to dismiss because flapping shingles can easily be ripped off your roof by a wind gust, causing your home to leak. The remedy? Reach out to a roofer you trust and have them do a thorough assessment of your roof’s condition so you can schedule the needed repairs or replacement before more costly problems arise.

What to Do if You Spot Wind Damage to Your Roof

Document the Damage

Take pictures and make notes about the damage you notice. This will help when you file an insurance claim.

Contact a Roofer

Reach out to a trusted local roofer and have your roof inspected for damage.

File a Claim with Your Insurance

If your home experienced damage due to severe weather, call your insurance company. They will send out an adjustor to determine how much they will cover.

3 Reasons to Schedule Professional Roof Inspections Each Year

While it’s important that you inspect your roof with binoculars from the safety of the ground each fall, spring, and after major storms—nothing beats a professional inspection.

1. Catch roof issues while they are small

Regular, professional roof inspections ensure any minor issues are spotted when they are small. Sounds good, right?

2. Save money and hassles

When your roof is inspected by a contractor’s trained eye, you’ll save money and bypass the hassles of resolving major roofing issues. Why? Because your roofer will proactively address any minor repair needs, ensuring your home is well protected.

3. Enjoy the full lifespan of your current roof

Your current roof will go the distance when you care for it properly. How? With timely maintenance and repairs, which are typically done following a professional inspection. Convinced it’s time to schedule a roof assessment? Great! We’re here to help.
